The contraceptive of tomorrow. Independent forecast

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

We live in an era of high technology. 10 years ago it was difficult to imagine artificial intelligence, but today neural networks are our reality. The possibility of bearing children in an artificial womb and editing the human genome no longer seems like science fiction.

At the same time, it is surprising that nothing new has happened in the field of contraception and family planning over the past 60 years.

On June 1961, the first contraceptive pill was registered. Since then, many medicinal forms have been released, its composition and the dose of hormones have changed, but the principle of action has remained the same.

I would compare it to shooting sparrows from a cannon. If the previous generation desperately struggled with excessive fertility, then 60 years later we have an epidemic of infertility and are reaping the bitter fruits of the hormonal pill.

What does the future hold for us regarding contraception?

  • Contraception like medicine in general, will become more personalized, taking into account hormonal status, the presence of concomitant diseases and long-term reproductive goals.

  • It will become important to maintain your fertility at the age of 30-35 in order to delay reproductive aging and women will more often choose non-invasive methods of contraception.

  • Appearance of Biosensor devices that monitor fertility indicators around the clock and signal the ability to conceive

  • Digital technologies will replace doctor’s prescriptions and you will be able to access contraception through apps

  • Chips that will be implanted into the brain to control signals from the hypothalamus-pituitary system and suppress the production of sex hormones.

  • New biomarkers of fertility and pregnancy will be discovered, on the basis of which fertility sensors similar to glucometers will be created.

I think you remember that there are boundaries of ethics in the issue of contraception and modern technologies which can be both good and evil.

I would be glad if you share your thoughts in the comments. Which of this do you think is real and which is not.
